SI.com: Given all the chaos and injuries this season, I’m continually impressed by how your team plays. The talent hasn’t been there this season, but you guys play unselfishly on offense, running through your sets, and very hard on defense. How have you managed to keep guys motivated and playing this way?

Williams: It was something I prayed about before the season. I saw our team, and I just prayed we would compete every night. I knew our fans would be upset when we lost Chris Paul, but I think having guys like Jason Smith, Marco Belinelli and Jarrett Jack has made this year a lot easier. Those three guys, every single night, they play hard. That’s what they do.

SI.com: I think fans would read that and say, “Jason who? And Marco Belinelli? What is he talking about?”

Williams: Marco is a monster. A monster. He is who we are, and who we want to be.

SI.com: Wow.

Williams: He never, ever complains. He works hard every single day. He and Jason (Smith) have been the biggest surprises for me since I’ve been here and two of my favorite people since I’ve been a coach.

SI.com: Dato tutto il caos e gl’infortuni di quest’anno continuo ad essere impressionato da come gioca la tua squadra. Manca il maggior talento quest’anno, ma voi ragazzi giocate con altruismo in attacco e grande forza in difesa. Come sei riuscito a gestire il gruppo per mantenerlo motivato e renderlo in grado di giocare così?

Williams: Ho pregato molto per questo prima della stagione. Ho visto la squadra ed ho semplicemente pregato d’essere competitivo ogni serata. Sapevo che i nostri tifosi avrebbero preso male la perdita di Chris Paul, ma penso che avere ragazzi come Jason Smith, Marco Belinelli e Jarrett Jack abbia reso la stagione più facile. Questi tre ragazzi giocano duro ogni singola serata. Questo è quello che fanno.

SI.com: Penso che i tifosi leggendo diranno, “Jason chi? E Marco Belinelli? Di chi sta parlando?”

Williams: Marco è un mostro. Un mostro. Lui è chi siamo e chi vogliamo essere.

SI.com: Wow.

Williams: Non si lamenta mai, mai. Lavora duro ogni singolo giorno. Lui e Jason (Smith) sono stati la più grande sorpresa da quando sono qui, nonché due delle mie persone preferite da quando faccio l’allenatore.
